Nurses say the level of overcrowding at the region’s main hospital has reached its second highest level ever recorded.
100 people were waiting on trolleys at University Hospital Limerick as of this morning according to the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation, which is nearly double the amount of patients waiting for a bed than the next busiest facility.
It comes as a Minister of State at the Department of Health says the provision of the new 96-bed block at the region’s main hospital is set to progress further in the coming weeks.
The measure, which was committed to in Project Ireland 2040 and will create 48 new beds in real terms at University Hospital Limerick, is now undergoing a tender evaluation process.
