A 10-year-old boy has been airlifted to hospital following a road traffic collision in Co Clare this afternoon.
The incident occurred at Purcell Park in Shannon at around 2.10pm. It’s understood the boy was struck by a vehicle.
Clare County Fire and Rescue Service crews from Shannon, who had been hosting an open day at the time at their station, were alerted by a passer-by and promptly mobilised to the scene. The National Ambulance Service and Gardaí were also alerted.
The HSE’s Cork-based Emergency Aeromedical Service air ambulance was tasked to the incident and was able to land in a playing field close to the scene. The child was airlifted to University Hospital Limerick for treatment but was expected to be transferred to a Dublin hospital for further specialist care.
The road from the roundabout at the Purcell Park / Gort Road junction has been closed to traffic however a diversion along a local walkway has been put in place to facilitate locals.
The road will remain closed overnight pending completion of a technical examination by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators tomorrow.
A Garda spokesperson said: “Gardaí and emergency services attended the scene of a road traffic collision in Shannon, Co. Clare this afternoon, Sunday 25th February 2024.
The incident occurred in the Purcell Park area and involved a car and a male juvenile child. The child has been taken to University Hospital Limerick to be treated for injuries believed to be serious at this time.
The entrance to Purcell Park is currently closed to traffic with local diversions in place. No further information is available at this time.”
