There’s been a ten percent drop in the number of households on Clare County Council’s housing list in the past year.
However, figures show nearly 2,900 households remain in need of accommodation in this county.
Clare County Council’s Monthly Management Report for this month details the needs of 2,867 households awaiting accommodation from the local authority.
Around three quarters of these applicants are looking for a two bed home, with around 1 in 6 looking for a three bed dwelling.
More than 40 percent of households on the list have jotted down Ennis as their first location of choice, with Shannon the next most popular area, followed by Clarecastle and the combined area of Inagh/Ennistymon/Lahinch.
On the other end of the scale, just 7 households have Kilfenora down as their first preference, with 13 opting for Kilmaley and 19 for Kilmihil.
More than 1,200 tenancies in Clare are availing of the Housing Assistance Payment, with a further 177 being assisted with the Rental Accommodation Scheme.
The local authority says demand for social housing support in the county is ‘ever increasing’, while it notes a demand for homeless services here is now ‘unprecedented’ for this time of the year.
