Over 10% Of Clare Residents Carrying Non-Irish Citizenship

More than 10% of people living in Clare carry a non-Irish citizenship.

A new CSO analysis of the most recent Census results, has found that more than 12 thousand residents in Clare are citizens of a country other than Ireland.

The Central Statistics Office’s “Diversity, Migration, Ethnicity, Irish Travellers and Religion” report is based on the 2022 Census results and as such does not include international protection applicants or those temporarily residing in Ireland.

According to the findings, a total of 12,447 people living in Clare are citizens of a country other than Ireland.

UK is the most common non-Irish citizenship here and is held by 2,471 or 2% of Clare residents, closely followed by Polish citizenship which is held by 2,462 or a further 2% of those living in this county.

Polish citizens make up 5% of the populations of Shannon and Sixmilebridge, while 4% of Ennis residents and 3% of those living in Kilrush carry a citizenship from the Central European nation.

Meanwhile, UK citizens account for just under 3% of the population of Killaloe, 2% of the population of Kilrush and less than 2% of the populations of Newmarket-on-Fergus, Ennis, Shannon and Sixmilebridge.

Ennis has the lowest rate of Irish citizenship of any town in Clare which just 82% of people ticking the Irish citizen box on the census.

As of April 2022, there are 631,785 non-Irish citizens living in Ireland which has grown from 11% to 12% of the total population since 2016.
