1.2 billion paid out to bond holders today

 

Unsecured bondholders at the former Anglo Irish Bank will today be paid back 1-point-2 billion euro.

The pay-out comes despite calls on the government from the opposition not to honour the debt.

The Taoiseach said yesterday he had no intention of defaulting on payments to bondholders – as it would put Ireland on the same footing as Greece.

During a debate in the Dáil last night, opposition politicians urged the government not to honour unsecured debts at the failed bank.

But Junior Minister at the Department of Finance, Brian Hayes, defended the government’s position – saying it was not in Ireland’s interest to renege on its debts:
