Limerick-based folk band Kingfisher release their debut single in the form of the track ‘flowers-fire’ on Friday, April 29.
Trio Edmond Keogh, Eoghan “McGoo” McGrath & Eoin Fitzgibbon met while studying in UL in 2017.
The dissolution of Edmond’s previous band, elm094, gave space for the three to start a new project, Kingfisher.
Being part of the National Folk Orchestra of Ireland, banjo player McGoo’s skills add a traditional timbre to the groups sound, which helps the band thread the line between familiar and avant-garde.
The band’s name comes from a bird which frequents the River Boro in Edmond’s native county of Wexford.
The lads all grew up listening to The Killers and Bruce Springsteen, maturing musically with the likes of Mumford and Sons, We Banjo 3 and Ben Howard.
Now, Kingfisher feels it’s time to add their voice to the conversation.
The band’s debut single, ‘flowers-fire’, is a sprawling, continuous build, which draws on Edmond’s personal experiences in love, acting as an apotheosis for what could have been.
