Drop Of 15% In New Car Sales For 2019

There was a 15% drop in the number of new car sales in Clare last year.

New figures from the Department of Transport show that around 2,800 cars were registered across 2019, compared to 3,300 the previous year.

2,787 of cars were registered in Clare in 2019, representing a 15% drop on 2018 figures.

According to the Department of Transport’s latest bulletin of vehicle and driver statistics, it was the first time since 2014 that vehicle registrations dropped below 3,000.

Altogether there are just over 58,500 private cars registered in the county, with Toyota the most popular brand for drivers last year, with Ford coming a close second.

3,000 tractors are also licensed in the county, with Clare people showing a clear preference for Massey Ferguson – there are 869 of these tractors registered here, which more than double that of the next favourite, John Deere.

Meanwhile, over 1,000 motorbikes are registered in the banner county, with Honda the clear favourite, having sold almost double the number of Clare motorcylists’ 2nd choice, Suzuki.

The report also shows that there are now 84,000 driving licenses registered in the county.

Of those, 5,400 are learner’s permits.
