Uisce Éireann has admitted it’s “embarrassed” by any instance of raw sewage being discharged into the sea off Clare’s west coast.
The water utility’s Local Authority Engagement Director John Dempsey has given a presentation to members of Clare’s Economic Development Strategic Policy Committee where he’s revealed €74 million was invested in water and infrastructure here from 2014 to 2024.
During the meeting, Lahinch Fine Gael Councillor Bill Slattery asked what measures have been taken to prevent the presence of bacteria in the water in his local area following the issuing of several ‘do not swim’ notices last summer.
Uisce Éireann was fined €32,000 last year for offences relating to wastewater discharges in Lahinch and Miltown Malbay, and Councillor Slattery says it’s “not good enough”.
