Retailers in North Clare are reporting a much quieter Christmas trade than normal this year.
It comes in spite of predictions from the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission that the average Irish shopper would spend over €1,700 this festive season; up 14 % on last year.
Some businesses in Ennistymon have pointed to challenges with both the hospitality and standard VAT rates, along with soaring utility bills, and parking deficits.
