The 48th year of Scoil Samhraidh Willie Clancy was due to be held this July, and this cancellation is the first in its history.

The announcement won’t come as a surprise, particularly in light of government regulations on mass gatherings.

However, it does represent a significant blow to the local economy.

Administrator of the Willie Clancy Summer School, Harry Hughes, says they had no other option.

This news represents a major economic blow to Miltown Malbay, and surrounding areas.

Some publicans say ‘Willie Week’ represents 20% of their annual turnover.

However, Harry Hughes says it wasn’t possible to hold even a reduced programme this July.

He is hopeful that they may be able to stage a weekend of events later in the year, and is adamant that they will be back in 2021.
