On Tuesday’s Morning Focus, Alan was joined by Colm Liddy who is a historian and author. Colm discussed the townland of Ballycar located between Sixmilebridge and Newmarket-on Fergus. Colm spoke about Ballycar as one of Clare’s 2,500 townlands and discussed many fascinating facts about the area. Some of those being that the townland featured on the front page of the New York Times in 1887. The current President of Ireland Michael D. Higgins hails from Ballycar along with Sean Shanagher who was a soldier dispatched to The Congo in the 1960’s as a UN Peacekeeper. Sean’s experience along with his comrades was turned into a movie ‘The Siege of Jadotville’ which can be viewed on Netflix. Sean still resides in the area.
