South-East Clare Parent Disputes Wording Of Family Amendment

A South-East Clare parent says she’ll be voting no in the Family Referendum due to the wording of the amendment.

The Family Amendment proposes inserting the phrase “whether founded on marriage or on other durable relationships” to the State’s recognition of family in order to acknowledge the validity of non-martial relationships such as civil partnerships and single-parent families as well as traditional marriages.

The phrase “durable relationships” has become the subject of much debate due to there being no concrete definition of it available.

Cratloe mother Trish Lehane has issues with the phrase because she feels it implies that relationship considered “durable” could potentially end.
