Ruan Pro Cyclist Urges Motorists Not To View Cyclists As “Obstacles”

A Clare professional cyclist is encouraging motorists to view cyclists as people trying to get home instead of as obstacles.

Former National Road Champion Imogen Cotter is participating in a safety campaign with the RSA and Skoda Ireland to raise awareness of the vulnerability of cyclists on the road.

The Ruan native suffered serious injuries in January 2022 after being struck by a car travelling over 60km/h on the wrong side of the road, resulting in five surgeries and hundreds of hours of physiotherapy.

With RSA stats indicating that 9% of cyclist injuries are a result of a hit-and-run, Imogen says an attitude shift is required to ensure the safety of all vulnerable road users.
