Mayor Says Ennis Businesses “Hurting” Because Of Commercial Rates Pressure

The Mayor of Ennis claims businesses in the county town are “hurting” due to pressure to pay commercial rates.

In its annual budget last November, Clare County Council reduced its indicative ARV or Annual Rate of Valuation, by 4.4%, meaning six out of 10 businesses in the county have seen a reduction in the rates they owe the local authority.

A revaluation process took place last year to ensure all businesses were paying rates consistent with the current value of their business and this resulted in just over 5% of businesses appeal their new valuation.

Following on from a motion he tabled on this subject at a meeting of Ennis Municipal District this week, Fianna Fáil Councillor Pat Daly is arguing this process has been more of a hindrance than a help.
