HIQA Inspection Of North Clare Nursing Home Finds Patient’s Care Plan Not Updated After Significant Weight Loss

A HIQA inspection of a North Clare nursing home has found that a patient’s care plan was not updated after they experienced significant weight loss.

St. Dominic Savio Nursing Home in Liscannor was found to be non-compliant in one area of the unannounced inspection which took place in April of this year.

An unannounced inspection of the Liscannor facility was carried out by the Health Information and Quality Authority on the 4th of April of this year, following a previous inspection which found repeat non-compliance in nine areas.

On the day of the most recent inspection, 28 residents were in the facility.

The report noted that staff were observed to be “unhurried and respectful” towards patients while one resident told inspectors that “the place is beautiful” and that staff were “so kind” to them.

The facility was found to be largely compliant with significant improvements identified in staffing, upkeep of the premises and pateitn safety.

However, it was found that residents did not have a comprehensive assessment of their health and social care needs completed.

One case was observed where a patient who had experienced significant weight loss did not have their care plan updated to address the health risk posed to them.

For this reason, the facility was rated as non-compliant in the area of “individual assessment and care plan”.

To address this in the future, the facility said it would “formally review, at intervals not exceeding four months, the care plan” following consultation with the resident and their family.
