East Clare Councillor “Can’t Understand” Strategic Development Zone Hold-Up

An East Clare councillor says he “can’t understand” the hold-up regarding a long-awaited Strategic Development Zone.

Clare County Council and the University of Limerick submitted a joint application in February 2022 to designate lands north of the campus as an Economic Strategic Development Zone, but no decision on the project has yet been made by government.

Aimed at attracting foreign direct investment into the region, the SDZ would consist of educational facilities, research labs, student accommodation and was predicted to create 3,500 jobs while bringing €1.795 billion into the economy each year.

Clonlara Independent Councillor Michael Begley believes the benefits for both Clare and Limerick would be immense.
