This marks a 16 per cent year on year rise, and is over 530 thousand euro more than in 2014, when the figure for insurance premiums includes amoutns paid by the County Council and also the former Town Councils of Kilrush and Ennis.

New figures show over 18 million euro has been paid in local authority insurance premiums since the start of the decade.

Last year’s amount was the highest in that time, and the trends are said to be reflective of those throughout the country.

A number of strategies are in place to reduce risk, and in turn costs, and the fluctuations largely relate to pubilc liability claims, which can vary significantly.
