Council Intervention Sought To Ward Off Anti-Social Behaviour In Lahinch

Locals in Lahinch are calling for Council intervention to ward off what they say are unacceptable levels of anti-social behaviour in the seaside village.

They say that since the COVID-19 restrictions were eased, there’s been an influx of young people into the resort at weekends, with a high number of problems.

Locals in Lahinch say groups of young people, who have arrived into the village in greater numbers since June, are damaging its good name and impacting on the lives of residents.

There’s reports of vandalism and destruction of property, including at the local national school, as well as littering

There’s also a concern that social distancing guidelines are not being followed.

Local resident Jack says something needs to be done.

Another resident, Selina O’Sullivan, says that on top of this resources aren’t in place to deal with the increased visitors.

She’s one of those who says the focus on staycations has brought a different crowd into Lahinch, and with it, unique problems.

She’s commending council workers for their efforts to keep the village clean, but wants the local authority to do more to ensure that people are safe.

Local Councillor Shane Talty says there’s no doubt that the sheer numbers descending on coastal villages, including the likes of Kilkee and Doolin as well as Lahinch, are posing a big challenge.

The Fianna Fáil Councillor is pleading with those that visit to adhere to social guidance, to behave responsibly and be respectful of residents.

Councillor Talty says he and other local representatives have been in contact with emergency services on the matter.
