Clare TD Calls For Farmers’ Bills To Be Paused Until ACRES Payments Are Issued

A Clare TD has demanded that Teagasc refrain from issuing bills to farmers until such time as ACRES payments are made.

The Minister for Agriculture has confirmed that due to “unprecedented numbers”, farmers who’ve been approved for the ACRES Co-Operation Project won’t receive their advance payments until February 2024.

The scheme aims to support farmers in enhancing biodiversity, climate, air, and water quality on their farms, and 46,000 farmers were accepted into the first tranche for which contracts begun on the 1st of January.

Speaking in the Dáil, Scariff Independent Deputy Michael McNamara says it’s “outrageous” for Teagasc to be issuing bills to farmers before they’ve received their ACRES payments.
