Clare Leaving Cert Students Encouraged To “Earn And Learn” By Doing An Apprenticeship

An Ennis-based guidance counsellor is encouraging Leaving Cert students to take the “earn and learn” route by doing an apprenticeship.

Over 1,000 students across the county will receive their long-awaited Leaving Cert results tomorrow morning.

Tension is mounting in households throughout Clare with exam results due to be issued at 10am on Friday morning.

With over 1,400 eagerly anticipating their results, all eyes are on CAO offers as the college semester gets underway in just a few weeks.

However, with severe staff shortages noted in a number of trades, many are encouraging students to take the apprenticeship route instead of opting for a third-level university course.

Ennis native Lucas Kelly, who is training to be an electrician, believes apprenticeships are becoming increasingly popular as they provide a steady income while equipping the apprentice with vital skills.

With the first round of CAO offers due on Wednesday the 30th of August, a guidance counsellor in the county town is advising students to consider all options including apprenticeships and PLCs.

Aine Meehan of Ennis Community College and Gaelcholáiste an Chláir says an abundance of opportunities are available for students who want to earn while they study.
