Clare IFA Chair Claims EPA Report Highlights Farmers Can Adapt Without Cow Culling Scheme

The Clare Chair of the Irish Farmers Association says they need more time to assess and implement sustainable farming technologies.

The Environmental Protection Agency’s latest report shows that agricultural emissions fell by 1.2% last year, despite a rise in herd numbers.

The EPA has attributed the reduction to a marked decrease in nitrogen fertiliser use, with the product becoming virtually unattainable from the outset of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Ireland is still running behind on its goal of reducing agricultural emissions by 25% for 2030, with the prospect of introudcing a cow culling scheme under consideration by the Department of Agriculture.

However Parteen farmer, Tom Lane believes the EPA ‘s report proves that climate goals can be met by adpating to alternative methods.
