Clare Escapes The Brunt Of Storm Debi

Clare County Council is urging people to remain on the look out for debris and possible spot flooding on roads following Storm Debi overnight.

A severe weather alert was issued for the county overnight and a Status Yellow wind and rain warning ended at 3 o’clock today.

A mobile home was flattened during Storm Debi overnight in Fanore while a caravan was lifted off the ground and onto its side at Whitestrand Miltown Malbay.

Both were completely destroyed.

No one was injured in either incident however debris including insulation and personal items were left strewn over a wide area.

The popular walking route at the Flaggy Shore in the north of the county was also left impassible after tonnes of stones and seaweed were was onto the roadway and surrounding lands.

Flooding has also been reported on the N67 between Kilcolgan and Ballyvaughan and between Liscannor and Lahinch.

Crews from Clare County Council and Clare County Fire and Rescue Service have been responding to issues since 6am this morning.

Senior Engineer John Leahy has been telling Clare FM’s Fiona Cahill that Clare escaped the brunt of the storm.

Five thousand homes and businesses across Clare were left without power earlier today, as strong winds and heavy rain battered the county.

ESB Crews have since restored supply to the vast majority of those, but hundreds have yet to be connected.

ESB Networks Area Manager, Ed Hunt has been telling Clare FM’s Fiona Cahill that a lot of progress has been made, but flooding is hampering the operation in some areas.

Meanwhile, Shannon Airport has facilitated two diversions from Dublin Airport this morning due to Storm Debi.

A Finnair flight routing from Helsinki to Dublin diverted to Shannon this morning and landed safely at 9.40am.

A New York flight bound for Dublin also diverted to Shannon Airport and landed safely at 10:11 am.

Shannon Airport is operating a full schedule today, but passengers are advised to check with their airlines in case of delays at other airports internationally.
