Clare County Council is reminding swimmers of the steps that can be taken to avoid cold water shock over the Christmas holidays.
Cold water swimming has surged in popularity in this county and beyond in recent years, partially stemming from the closure of swimming pools and other indoor amenities during the pandemic.
However, cold water shock, also known as cold shock hypothermia, can be experienced in particularly chilly conditions and Water Safety Ireland warns that “the shock of the cold water coming in contact with the skin can result in incapacitation and drowning”.
Clare County Council Water Safety Officer Clare McGrath says taking simple steps to keep your body warm and gradually introduce it to the cool temperature can make all the difference.
