Clare Councillors Urge Health Minister To Increase Spend On Suicide Awareness

Clare Councillors are calling on the Health Minister to increase the spend on suicide awareness campaigns.

The latest available figures, which were compiled before the pandemic show 524 people died by suicide in this country in 2019.

However, Sixmilebridge Councillor PJ Ryan says there was a similar spend on prevention and research for road deaths, of which there were 173 in the same year.

The Independent Councillor, who put forward a motion at this month’s meeting of Clare County Councilors, believes the Government needs to double the money spent on suicide awareness.
