The Cathaoirleach of Clare County Council insists it’s time to bring an end to the days of carrying out patchwork jobs on our roads.

Transport Minister Shane Ross has allocated €26.5 million to the repair of regional and local roads in Clare this year – a 12% increase on the figure 12 months ago.

It’s received a broad welcome here, as Clare FM’s James Mulhall reports:

An additional €3 million euro in funding to assist in the repair of regional and local roads in Clare has received a broad welcome.

It represents a 12% increase on last year’s figure and a €12million jump on the 2017 allocation for the county.

A number of projects are set to benefit from the money, with €8 million to go on the Shannon River Crossing at Killaloe alone, while over €770,000 will be spent on bridges across the county.

Cathaoirleach of Clare County Council, Independent Clonlara Councillor Michael Begley says it’s important to spend this money wisely, to preserve Clare’s network of roads for years to come.

This round of funding will be spent solely on larger roads in this county, with small roads and boreens in Clare to be treated separately under the Local Improvement Scheme.

Overall, there was over a million euro allocated to Clare last year for these works, which includes non-public roads which often lead to homes and businesses, where they would not normally be covered by the local authorities.

Fine Gael Junior Minister Pat Breen is hopeful we’ll see a positive announcement on that in the coming weeks, to ensure all roads in need of repair in Clare are dealt with.
