John Lonergan, former Governor of Mountjoy Prison spoke to Gavin Grace on The Today Show following the publication of a new report on Ireland’s prison system. The report, "The Irish Prison System: Vision, Values, Reality", provide an in-depth analysis of the prison system and make 15 recommendations to overhaul Irish prisons. John was governor of Mountjoy, Ireland’s largest prison, for 22 years. He is outspoken about social justice issues, in particular the use of imprisonment. The report is compiled by the Jesuit Centre for Faith and Justice who says overcrowding has become such a problem in Irish prisons that we are now just "warehousing" inmates. Their report says the Irish prison population has doubled since 1995. It’s recommending a reduction in the number of inmates – from over 4,000 a day at the moment  to 2,700.

Tom Blake, Director of Irish National Seismic Network spoke to Gavin about how today’s 6.8 magnitude earthquake in Japan was felt as far away as the West of Ireland and recorded on a newly installed seismometer at the Cliffs of Moher. Funded by the Geological Survey of Ireland (GSI) and part of the Outreach Programme for Seismology in Schools, run by the INSN, the state-of-the-art device is the first of its kind to be installed in County Clare.  The Burren and Cliffs of Moher Geopark also has become the latest Geopark to operate a seismometer. Tom Blake says that the seismometer is so sensitive that it can easily pick up strong seismic activity on the other side of the world.
