The Today Show – Wednesday June 13th

Joining Clare FM’s Gavin Grace on The Today Show this afternoon was Niamh Quinn. Niamh is a
Primary Teacher at Quilty National School and later this summer will head to Papua New Guinea to work as a volunteer teacher trainer in the developing country.  She’s organising a special fundraising walk this Friday evening to raise much needed funds to help the locals. Registration at Quilty National School for the 5k walk and fun run takes place at 6pm and the walk commences at 7pm. Everyone is encouraged to join in a family evening out in aid of VSO (Voluntary Service Overseas), in association with Kilmurry Ibrickane GAA, which supports some of the world’s poorest communities. One such community in Papua New Guinea needs a teacher trainer and Niamh has volunteered to give of her skills for a year beginning in August. Registration fees for adults is €10, children €5 and for a family €20. Refreshments for all will be provided afterwards at Quilty National School.

Prof. Gerry Boyle, Director of Teagasc also spoke to Gavin following today’s launch of a €5million Vita Potato Centre of Excellence in Africa. It’s hoped the centre will increase the supply of food in African countries and was being launched today by Minister of Agriculture Simon Coveney. The Potato Centre of Excellence is a programme for growing Irish potatoes in Gamo Gofa in Southern Ethiopia; its aim is to enable the two million population to feed themselves in the long term. Prof. Boyle discussed how the “Irish” potato as a crop is being successfully used as a food crop in the region. It’s hoped that in the coming years Ethiopia will be in a position to grow their own varieties of potatoes better suited to their climate

Martin McMahon, Treasurer with Slainte an Chlair or Clare Cancer Support, as it’s also known, joined the show to inform listeners of a special family day out this weekend. Clare Vintage Club Family Day takes place this Sunday June 17th at the Show grounds in Ennis from 12 o’clock.  All proceeds from the show will be donated to Slainte an Chlair. On the day there will be vintage car and tractor displays, mini digger challenges, bouncy castles and much more. All those interested in taking their vintage cars or tractors are advised to arrive in advance of 12 noon on the day.

Dr Máire Finn of the Ennis Family Medical Centre joined The Today Show for her weekly medical feature – this week Máire focused on gout! She spoke about how it still can have an impact on people’s lives, causing severe and painful swelling, even though we think it no longer affects people in modern society.  She says a high protein diet can be a trigger but says vitamin c, dairy and cherries are all quite good to help reduce it. Dr. Finn also answered listener queries on hairline fractures and infections.
