On The Today Show Gavin Grace discussed the increasing number of calls made to MABS.  Michael Culloty of the Money Advice and Budgeting Service spoke about the range of calls and contacts that are made to the agency. A record number of people in financial difficulty have sought help from the Money Advice and Budgeting Service so far this year. The Agency says it regularly deals with around 7,000 new clients each quarter. But between January and March, it rose to almost 7, 600. The majority of those looking for help were aged between 26 and 40 years of age – and most the common problem reported related to personal loans. MABS Ennis can be contacted on 0761 072 430

Michael Martin is a Titanic Historian, based in Cobh.  He joined the show to talk about this week’s commemoration events surrounding the 100th anniversary of The Titanic. Queenstown or Cobh as it’s now known was the Titanic’s last port of call where 123 passengers boarded the magnificent vessel.  Cobh will play host to a memorable series of events from April 9th to the 15th to remember The Titanic and the people associated with her. Dr. Máire Finn of the Ennis Family Medical Centre was in studio for her weekly medical feature. Today she covered a wide range of topics and queries sent in by listeners.  She discussed ear aches, weight loss and high blood pressure, moles and malignant melanoma, ingrown toenails and blisters.

Mark Beasley is the Executive Director of the Dogs Trust Ireland – the country’s largest dog welfare charity. Mark spoke to Gavin about the high destruction rate in Irish pounds and how they now rescue and re-home over 1,000 puppies/dogs each year. In 2010, according to figures from the Department of the Environment, 547 dogs were put down in Co. Clare. Nationally the figure was 5,244.  The Dogs Trust helps as many dogs as possible to be re-homed from rescue centres and pounds nationwide. In 2006 they commenced an education campaign, which offers free workshops to primary schools in Leinster and Munster. They focus on teaching 5 -12 year olds about responsible dog ownership. In 2009 they opened a re-homing centre.

Also on The Today Show, Gavin spoke with Noreen Stokes. Noreen is the Treasurer for The Great Duck Race in Killaloe/Ballina, which takes place this Sunday. The Great Duck Race is in aid of Limerick animal welfare and will see a thousand rubber ducks compete to win the coveted title of King of the Ducks – It takes place on Sunday April 15th on the banks of Lough Derg..  Contributions from the day’s fundraising will also go towards the Ballina / Killaloe Tidy Towns Committees.
