The Today Show – Tuesday June 19th

On The Today Show this afternoon – Orla Ni Eili of the Clare Immigrant Support Centre, Alphonse Basogomba of the Clare Intercultural Network and local author and refugee Hassan Faramarz joined Clare Fm’s Gavin Grace in studio to mark World Refugee Day which takes place tomorrow. The day is being marked in Ennis with an event from 11- 1pm in the Old Ground Hotel Ennis. This event is being run by Clare Intercultural Network, Clare Care, Clare Immigrant Support Centre, Clare Women’s Network and Ennis Community Development Project (CDP). There will be songs, poetry, video and a book reading. The reading will be from “The Flagless Ones” by Ennis resident Hassan Faramarz. The video is documenting changes in the life of Ennis based woman who came to Ennis as a refugee. All are welcome to attend.

This year the UNHCR theme for World Refugee Day is ‘Dilemma’. As can be imagined, dilemma is part and parcel of the everyday experience of refugee lives, dilemmas of leaving families, friends, communities and countries, without any hope of seeing them again. Hassan Faramarz spoke of his personal experience of being a refugee, when he had to flee his native Iran for India, then Nepal, then China before coming to Ireland. World Refugee Day, which has been marked in Clare for the past 19 years is still of immense importance and continues to aim to encourage public support for refugees, asylum seekers and those in need of international protection here in Ireland and around the world.

Philip Moreau, our resident Horticulturist and Gardening Expert was in studio to answer your queries
in our weekly feature – In the Garden.  Today he discussed fruit crops from your fruit trees, Philip says if you notice fruit dropping from tree’s at this time of year and are worrying that you’ll have no crop at the end of the year then fear not – this is a natural selection process devised by nature that occurs every June. He also answered queries on wire worms.  Wire worms are the larvae of click beetles and occur in pasture or grassland. If you are developing an area for growing vegetables and open new ground you will find wire worms but there numbers will diminish by next year. He also spoke of potato crops and how you can get a larger crop by using your own seed potatoes as they are better acquainted with your soil. He also advised on potato blight and even the best type of strimmer!
