The Today Show – Tuesday January 24th

Clare FM’s Gavin Grace discussed the fall out from Sunday’s Junior Football semi final between Dromid Pearses and Derrytresk. The Kerry and Tyrone sides have made the headlines following scenes of violence from players and supporters alike.  Murt Murphy, a Freelance Journalist & Broadcaster who’s based in Tralee attended the match and was horrified by the scenes.  He feels severe penalties are needed to curb this behaviour. Meanwhile, Gardaí are waiting to speak to a number of people following the violence during the All-Ireland Club JFC semi-final in Portlaoise last Sunday. Kerry’s Dromid Pearses manager Michael Anthony O’Connell claimed his family were put in danger when Derrytresk supporters from Tyrone leaped over the seating to join a fight on the field. Ger Hoey, former Inter County Referee from Kilanena, also discussed the incident with Gavin and gave his take on these incidents as a former referee.

Gearoid Mannion of Tom Mannion Travel Worldchoice joined Gavin for his weekly travel feature. This week Gearoid advises on popular Honeymoon destinations, packages, visas and deals.  Gearoid gave us plenty of food for thought – honeymoon or not – on travelling to Italy and Cyprus, the Caribbean; Cuba and the Dominican Republic, the East; Thailand and Vietnam, and Cape Town, South Africa.

Robert Widders, Author of The Emperor’s Irish Slaves discussed his new book. Robert applied to join the Royal Navy at the age of 14 and today enjoys the unusual distinction of being the last man alive to have served in all three branches of the British armed services; the Royal Navy, the Army and the RAF. Robert Widders lives in Bristol and has just published his third book, an account of the 650 Irish soldiers imprisoned in the Japanese POW camps during the Second World War.

Students who are now deciding what courses they are applying for through the CAO, especially those interested in Science, Engineering, Technology and IT, may get some extra help by logging on to www.smartfutures.ie.  Donna McCabe, Online Communications Manager, with Discover Science & Engineering (DSE) spoke to Gavin about how students can access the site and gather information on their career of choice and get advice from those already working in the ICT sector. The site seeks to engage with students, teachers, parents and guidance counsellors to raise awareness of employment opportunities in the ICT sector in Ireland. An online careers fair will take place from 23-27 January 2012 where companies will answer live questions from students and guidance counsellors about how to get into ICT.
