The Today Show – Tuesday April 17th

On The Today Show this afternoon, the issue of water charges took centre stage.  As reported in Clare FM news the Tanaiste has said the pricing structure for water charges has yet to be decided – despite reports that a 40 euro annual fee will be levied, on top of usage charges. Eamon Gilmore made the comments on his way into this morning’s Cabinet meeting – where Ministers are to discuss the issue. A new company – known as Irish Water – has to be set up, to take over water services from local authorities. Clare FM’s Maire Moynahan asked the people of Co. Clare how they feel about the incoming water charges. She also spoke to local Plumber – Seamus Allard from Caherea in Lissycasey about his views on water charges and how water is wasted. Pat in Kildysart also contacted the show to put his point across. Pat is a farmer and has been paying for his water usage for many years – he feels it’s only right to pay for what you use.

Gearoid Mannion of Tom Mannion Travel Worldchoice advised on travelling to the Canary Islands, the Balearics (Minorca, Majorca and Ibiza) and resort destinations in Spain in his weekly travel feature. He discussed holiday options for families and individuals across a variety of price ranges and accommodation types.  He advised on the Costa del Sol, Torremolinos, Nerja (east of Malaga), Marbella, Ronda, Costa Dorada, Salou, Port Aventura amusement park, Alcudia and Sacoma in Majorca and Barcelona.

Chris Hayes of the Irish Farmers Association discussed the rising cost of fuel and how it’s impacting on agricultural contractor costs for farmers around the county. He says the increase in fuel costs was now posing a real threat to margins, with many sectors finding it impossible to pass on these extra costs.  According to the IFA agri-fuel costs have doubled in the last three years, and that this is putting major financial pressure on all farmers. They also feel that oil companies are putting further pressure on some farmers by tightening credit terms and looking for payment within 14 days.

Stephen O’Farrell, of Arthritis Ireland, talked to Clare FM’s Gavin Grace about how arthritis sufferers who love to cook (but hate the discomfort the condition can bring) are being encouraged to get back in the kitchen. Arthritis Ireland has launched Let’s Cook! – a free programme of cooking lessons that combines balanced nutrition with hints to help reduce the stress on joints. Free courses are being held in Limerick and in Galway this May.  Details: www.arthritisireland.ie or call 01 647 0203.
