The Today Show – Thursday June 14th

On The Today Show this Thursday Gavin Grace was joined in studio by Cora Long, a carer from Scariff.  Cora cares for her husband Tom on a full time basis for the past 10 years.  Tom has serious health issues and requires round the clock care. Also in studio was Kathleen Lee from Ennis. Kathleen is a Clinic Nurse with Caring for Carers. Caring for Carers Ireland will draw attention to the massive contribution of hundreds of full-time family carers in County Clare by hosting a week-long programme of specially organised events during the 6th Annual Carer’s Week from 15th to the 22nd of June. Caring for Carers Clare in partnership with Clare County Library, the Clare Volunteer Centre, Clare Sports Partnership and the Health Service Executive Health Promotion Services in Clare, is co-ordinating the events around Clare specifically for Family Carers. Events include a Health & Wellbeing seminar at Glór, a lecture on Herbal Medicine at the Daycare Centre in Ennistymon, an advice session on Osteoporosis & Nutrition at Regina House in Kilrush, a Laughter Workshop in Ennis, a display of entries for the Schools Carers Art Competition at Ennis Library, and a series of Mid Summers Walks at various locations throughout the County. For more details see www.caringforcarers.ie or call 065 6866515. The Caring for Carers office is located on Carmody Street in Ennis.

Stephen McDermott, Clare FM presenter and our resident Film Reviewer joined Gavin to review the latest release of “Rock of Ages” starring Tom Cruise to the big screen.  He also discussed the late Henry Hill, who passed away yesterday. Henry Hill was the inspiration behind “Goodfellas” and the real life person behind Ray Liotta’s character in the classic mob movie.

Also on today’s show we heard the final instalment of our “Through the Ages” series which features the school kids of Clare re-animating the folklore and oral history of their grandparent’s generation. In 1937, a project instigated by the then Folklore Commission, saw tales, myths, legends, jokes, riddles, old cures and traditions collected by students of the time and catalogued as an oral history project and preserved for posterity.  Students of the time recorded the stories from their older relatives and neighbours in the locale. Today we heard from the pupils of Miltown Malbay National School.
