The Today Show – Thursday January 26th

On today’s show Gavin spoke to the Vita Cortex workers in Cork who say they’re more determined than ever to continue their fight for redundancy payments. Talks at the Labour Relations Commission collapsed after the plant’s owner Jack Ronan backed out of an agreement at the last minute. Gavin talked with Catherine McCabe and Sean Kelleher who are at the plant about their campaign. This is day 42 of the sit-in by the staff  who are now planning to escalate their campaign. They’re expected to stage a series of protests on the streets of Cork city over the coming days.

Amanda Quail, a Research Fellow with the Growing Up In Ireland Study discussed their findings with Gavin.  They found that children who spend their free time watching TV or hanging out with friends perform less well in school and that nine year olds who take part in cultural activities and social networking in their spare time have better reading and maths skills than children who watch TV.

Andy Legge, Manager of Shannon Town United AFC and Padraic Hayes from Shannon
and a member of the new Powerchair team spoke with Clare FM’s Maire Moynahan during their training session in Shannon.  The team, with players from Clare and Limerick taking part under the umbrella of Shannon Town United – and assisted by the FAI and Enable Ireland, will be competing next month. Training takes place every Tuesday in St Patrick’s Comprehensive Hall from 6 to 7pm.  The club are on the look out for anyone who’s interested in taking an active role in the development in the team – especially sponsorship or help with fundraising for equipment.
