The Today Show – Monday May 28th

On this afternoon’s edition of The Today Show, Gavin spoke with Jackie O’Callaghan of the National Parents Council after Department of Education research found that a portion of second-level schools still do not have a book rental scheme in place.  88% of VEC schools and 73% of those in the Community and Comprehensive sectors do, but less than half of second-level schools responded to the survey.  Jackie told Gavin that parents of students in the Junior Cycle can save over €300 through a scheme of this kind, while principal of Scarriff Community College Angela McNamara outlined the benefits of the program in the East Clare school.

Gavin also spoke with Andrew St. Ledger of CELT (Centre for Environmental Living and Training) and Eddie Connors of Imecofarm, Clarecastle, about a range of courses on offer to the public in the coming weeks and months.  People are being given the opportunity to learn about rainwater harvesting, bee keeping, boat building and building your own wind turbine, among others.  Further information is available on www.imecofarm.com.

Today also saw our regular fashion and food slots, with Tess Purcell and Paul ‘Calso’ Callaghan offering advice to listeners.  As the good weather continues (hopefully) Calso again advised us all to dust off the barbeques, or build our own, and suggested turkey burgers as his recipe of the week.  Tess, meanwhile, encouraged ladies in particular to pack light as they head on their travels this summer.  Other advice included choosing a general colour for your items of clothing when on your travels (so they can be used more than once and still match), to bring no more than two pairs of shoes and to put that expensive frock at the top of the case, wrapped in crepe paper, to ensure it doesn’t get damaged.
