Grace Cummins, Clare Rose of Tralee for 2011 spoke to Clare FM’s Gavin Grace about her recent trip to Chernobyl with Chernobyl Children International. In February Grace Cummins and Tara Talbot, the 2011 Rose of Tralee accompanied by 12 other roses from the 2011 Rose of Tralee International Festival travelled to Belarus to volunteer in the Adi Roche aided Vesnova Children’s Mental Asylum. The CCI – Chernobyl Children International, bring aid and medical assistance to hundreds of children in Belarus that were affected by the Nuclear Tragedy in Chernobyl 25 Years ago. Adi Roche accompanied the roses on the trip where they spent their time assisting with the children, giving them one to one human contact, which they are so deprived of. All of the roses fundraised for the trip with many events held in each of the participating counties.  Grace discussed the work they undertook in Belarus and the impact the trip has had on her and those that travelled to the asylum.

Paul “Calso” Callaghan, our resident Chef and Food Blogger joined The Today Show for his weekly food feature and today gave us some ideas for a Mother’s Day meal. Today’s recipe was for a sumptuous roast dinner with all the trimmings. Tess also gave us some tips on what to wear if travelling to Cheltenham this week as the festival’s Lady’s Day takes place on Wednesday.

8 year old Oliver Cassidy from Ennis made headlines over the weekend. Oliver spoke to Gavin about how he was struck in the face by wayward Ronan O’Gara practice kick at the Aviva Stadium on Saturday but to make up for it he was later presented with the match ball signed by his Munster hero. He was attending the Ireland/Scotland Six Nations match with his father David, when he was hit by the ball. They had been standing behind the goal while Ronan O’Gara was practicing his place-kicking prior to the start of Ireland’s 32-14 demolition of Scotland.

Clare FM Presenter and Clare’s Got Talent Judge Brian Flynn spoke to The Today Show about last night’s Semi Final of the talent show and discussed the three acts that booked their place in the live final – Crea O’Sullivan, Happy Feet and Saibh McDermott

As part of Seactain na Gaeilge, the 6th class students of Gaeilscoil Mhicil Chiosog in Ennis relayed poems in tribute to great Clare personalities who have passed away. Ruairi O Braonain recited his poem in memory of Micheál Ó Braonáin.  Michael Brennan was a native of Meelick and was one of three Brennan brothers who took a leading role in Clare and Ireland’s fight for Independence during the Irish War of Independence.   In the poem, Ruairí Ó Braonáin outlines how Michael fought against the Black and Tans and led the East Clare Brigade.
