The Today Show – Monday June 18th

Jean Tierney is the Manager of The Junction Youth Café in Cloughleigh – she joined Gavin Grace in studio today. The youth café is celebrating its 1 year anniversary today.  It was officially launch last June by the then Mayor of Ennis, Cllr. Tommy Brennan and Minister Frances Fitzgerald. It’s a multi purpose facility for the whole community and Jean told us about the projects and events it has witnessed in its first year.  The centre boasts a kitchen, craft room, project room, art space and youth café. Jean says it’s important to have a space provided for young people now more than ever as we are in turbulent times. She also discussed the upcoming projects being undertaken in the coming months that are in support of young people and the wider community. For more details see their facebook page or call 065 6845356.

Waterford man Alan Corcoran is undertaking a challenge like no other – a lap of Ireland 917 miles long.  To achieve this 21-year-old Alan will run 35 back-to-back marathons around the country in just 35 days. He spoke to Gavin from the Cliffs of Moher. Alan’s goal is to be the first person ever to run a lap of Ireland and to raise much needed funds for The Irish Heart Foundation. One in five people will have a stroke in their lifetime but not everyone will recognise the symptoms in time. The Irish Heart Foundation’s FAST campaign has so far saved hundreds of lives and Alan hopes that listeners will support him by donating just €1 for every marathon he completes by visiting www.35marathonman.ie

Artist Philip Brennan spoke to The Today Show about his latest news. As well as having one of his paintings presented to Michael D Higgins on the President’s visit to Clare, Philip follows up his participation in the Florence Biennale Art Festival in Italy last December by having two exhibitions in the county this summer. The first of these shows is called ‘From Loop Head to Valentia’ and features a collection of paintings inspired by the west coast, particularly that of the Loop Head peninsula where Philip has painted and followed his interest in bird migration since the early 1980’s. The exhibition also includes work from other parts of West Clare and from the neighbouring coasts of Kerry and Galway. The Kilkee exhibition will be launched at the Culturlann Sweeney Theatre Gallery in the town on Tuesday, June 19th at 6pm and will run for 3 weeks. Philip is also having a ‘Meet the Artist’ evening on Wednesday June 27th at 6.15pm when he will tell the stories behind the paintings.
