The Today Show – Monday January 30th

On Monday’s edition of the Today Show with Gavin Grace the issue of whether or not blood sports should be banned was raised by listeners and activists alike. Following a huge reaction to Clare FM sports coverage of the Clonmel hare coursing event, Clare FM Reporter Dermot Hogan spoke to people around the county about their views on the practice.  It coincides with today’s news that a Private Members Bill to ban live hare coursing is to be moved in the Dail. While protesters from a number of anti-blood sports campaign groups staged a demonstration outside the Department of Agriculture today to highlight their opposition to live hare coursing.  John Fitzgerald of the Campaign for the Abolition of Cruel Sports joined Gavin live from the protest to give his views.

TJ McIntyre, Chairman of Digital Rights Ireland spoke to Gavin about the Stop SOPA Ireland campaign which is against proposed legislation that would allow copyright holders to seek injunctions against those they believe to be infringing their copyright – namely music and movie sharing and download sites. Sean Sherlock, Minister of State for Research and Innovation has said he is not averse to primary legislation to bring in a measure aimed at balancing the rights of copyright holders and internet users, however he says he still intended to sign a ministerial order on copyright and this move was “imminent”. The members of Stop SOPA Ireland have called for a full Dáil debate. The number of signatures on their online petition had passed 70,000 today.
