The Today Show – Friday May 18th

On The Today Show this afternoon Gavin Grace spoke to Moyasta woman, Mary Haugh, who was recently awarded an Irish Pride Hospice Hero Award at a ceremony in the Mansion House in Dublin. At the Award Ceremony, Mary was described as a dedicated, loyal and hard working person who has been involved in hospice for the past 21 years. Her father was looked after by hospice and the wonderful experience that he had there made a lasting impression on her. She firmly believes that hospice care is not only beneficial for the patient but also for the family and relatives. Mary organises events, sells lines, organises socials and does coffee mornings locally, and to date has raised approximately €50,000 for hospice services.  The National Sunflower Days collection for local hospice services will take place locally on Friday, June 8th and Saturday, June 9th. All are urged to volunteer and to continue to give generously to support hospice care in their area.

Also on the show today was Chris Moreton from London and Matt Hussey from Birmingham. Both have Irish grandparents and are busking around the coast of Ireland at the moment. They joined The Today Show to talk about how they’re getting on, especially as they have never busked before! Their aim is to raise funds for the Irish Cultural Centre in Hammersmith. The Centre is the only dedicated Centre for Irish Culture in Britain but was threatened with closure last year as their freeholder, Hammersmith and Fulham Council, put the freehold up for sale. Thankfully, supporters raised enough to buy the freehold and the Centre was saved but they do need money for the refurbishment. The boys will be in Galway over Friday and Saturday (near Quay Street) so listen out!

Tony Kirby from Kilnaboy spoke to Gavin about a film premier taking place in Ennistymon tonight. is the Producer of a new Short Film entitled "West Cork" plus some North Clare Voices. The film is inspired by the poet Seán Dunne, a sorely lamented voice of Irish poetry, whose premature death in 1995 was a major shock in the Irish literary world. He’s most noted for his poem “West Cork – Gobnaits’ Bed; Rag Tree; Holy Well.  Three North Clare based people came together this spring to make a short 5 minute film version of the poem. Charles Cassin of Ballyvaughan filmed and edited; Mick O’Riordan of Doolin provided voice and original soundtrack, while Tony produced. The film will be launched at the Courthouse in Ennistymon tonight – Friday the 18th of May at 8.00 pm.
