On today’s show Máire spoke to Barry Keating, Clare’s Road Safety Officer about staying safe and visible at all times on the roads. As you’ll notice if you’re travelling around the county there are many walkers, joggers and cyclists out and about on the roads. Barry gave us advice on staying safe and seen on the county’s paths and roads, wearing high visibility jackets, having the correct lights, reflectors etc on your bike to make sure you remain accident free. High Vis vests are available free of charge from Clare County Council offices, local garda stations and from Clare FM reception.
Ger Heaney is the Treasurer of Mensa Ireland and joined Máire as the group are holding an IQ test session in Clare offering people the chance to discover their IQ score on Saturday 18 January at 2pm at the Old Ground Hotel, Ennis. There are currently 10 Mensa members in County Clare and an international membership of over 110,000 members in some 100 countries around the world. Check out www.mensa.ie for more details.
Aidan Courtney from The Ennis Book Shop was in studio to review The Wolf of Wall Street by Jordan Belfort – the true story that has been re-imagined on the big screen with Leonardo di Caprio. He also talked about crime caper The Family by Tonino Benecrista – the original fictitious work that is the basis for a recent de Niro film.
We also heard from John Damsel and Trevor Morrissey at East Clare Community Co-Op in Scarriff about how they have set up a community kitchen, which will provide a fully equipped facility for rent to existing or potential food producers. Denise Woods went to speak to them to see what exactly it is that they do in the Co-Op and how the new Kitchen will help the local community. Also on today’s programme Máire was joined in studio by members of Tulla Pipe Band, PRO Pam O’Reilly, Michael John Quigney, Ollie Maguire and Mike Daffy. The Tulla Pipe Band was formed on January 7th, 1936 and is now recognised nationally and internationally as a highly acclaimed prestigious Pipe Band with huge connections to sporting and musical events. The Tulla Pipe Band is one of the few Pipe Bands on the Island of Ireland to have survived since the 1930s. It is the last surviving Pipe Band in Co. Clare. As part of their 125th Anniversary celebrations The Co. Clare Association in New York have officially invited The Tulla Pipe Band to lead them up 5th Avenue on Monday 17 March 2014 in the Annual NY St. Patrick’s Day Parade. A special fundraising gig for the New York trip will be held in Malachy’s Bar in Quin on Saturday night featuring Geraldine Sexton and there will be a table quiz on Friday January 17th in Minogue’s in Tulla.
