The Afternoon Show – Wednesday December 12th 2012

Up for discussion on The Afternoon Show today was the rising cost of motor insurance for women. Charlie Weston is the Personal Finance Editor with the Irish Independent and joined Gavin Grace to talk about how motor insurance premiums are set to rise 24% on average for 25 year old women. It’s according to the AA who also says women of all ages are seeing their premiums increase. The AA, which has conducted a review of motor insurance premiums which fall due for renewal on or after the December 21st deadline for gender neutral prices, reports that the new rates are currently in line with expectations. As anticipated, premiums for young female drives are worst affected rising 24% on average across the eight different insurers that were featured in their survey.

Margie Roe of the Irish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children spoke to Gavin to raise awareness of a new helpline operated by the society. The ISPCC is pleased to announce that the 116 000 Missing Children’s Hotline is operational on a pilot basis from yesterday, December 11th. The main aim of this new hotline is to provide advice and support to missing children and their families. By dialling 116 000 the caller will be linked to someone they can talk to about the issue.

Peter O’Reilly is the Public Relations and Marketing Officer with the National Standards Authority of Ireland. He joined the show to advise parents and shoppers on safety. Parents should buy toys with safety standards to keep children safe this Christmas says the National Standards Authority of Ireland (NSAI). As parents prepare to shop for Christmas toys NSAI urges them to look out for particular labels and standards.
