On The Afternoon Show John Leech of Irish Water Safety joined Gavin to discuss how 26 rescuers from 22 dramatic near-death incidents will receive recognition at Irish Water Safety’s National Awards Ceremony at City Hall, Dublin today. 36 lives were saved through the brave actions of these rescuers. Among those being recognised are three Clare students – Eve Copley, Ellen McMahon and Aisling O’Sullivan will be honoured with the Seiko Just In Time Award. On the evening of Tuesday the 12th June 2012, three friends, Aisling, Eve and Ellen, were walking home from town when they noticed a woman in distress at the edge of the River Fergus, trying to retrieve her dog by calling to him. The woman entered the water and soon got into difficulty due to the strong current. Without hesitation the three friends quickly raced to the aid of the woman. Eve joined Gavin on the show to talk about the events that led to the award. Also being recognised at today’s awards is Paddy Casey from Spanish Point and the late Peter Downes for their many years saving lives in North Clare.

David Fitzsimons is the CEO of Retail Excellence Ireland, based here in Ennis. Irish retailers are predicting a drop of -0.47% in Christmas 2012 Trading, according to a survey published today by Retail Excellence Ireland (REI), Ireland’s largest retail industry trade body. The survey of 173 retail companies, which have over 1,550 stores around the country highlights that predicted retail sales for December 2012 will be down 0.47%, when compared with December 2011. The survey also reveals that 60% of retailers feel they will experience growth or like for like parity when compared with December 2011.

Clare FM’s Doireann Wilde was also out and about and asked the people of Clare whether or not they felt Christmas is coming too soon?

Sean Moynihan, the CEO of ALONE also joined Gavin on the show to talk about the group’s launch of their Christmas campaign today reminding people not to forget about elderly neighbours over the Christmas period. According to the charity over 120,000 elderly people live alone in Ireland and many will spend the holidays by themselves. ALONE’s ‘Share the Christmas Spirit’ campaign is asking people to call on their older neighbours who may be in need of assistance. ALONE is there for older people who are; in crisis and need emergency support in their own home, at risk of homelessness and need a place to live with some supports, lonely and would like someone to visit them on a regular basis, isolated and wish to meet other older people and participate in social events. Also Aisling Wheeler from Kilfenora told our listeners about an event that may interest them in Ennistymon tomorrow night. Ennistymon Transition Town and GIY (Grow It Yourself) Ennistymon are holding an information evening on Community Supported Agriculture. This will take place on Wednesday 28th November at 7pm at Ennistymon Vocational School. The event will finish at 9pm. Farmers, growers and consumers from 3 different Irish farms will speak about their experiences of Community Supported Agriculture. Lily de Sylva of Local Switch will speak about the rules and regulations governing direct selling, the different ways it can be organised and the financial opportunities for farmers. There will also be time for discussion afterwards.
