Dr. Luke Clancy from the Tobacco Free Research Institute joined Máire Moynahan on today’s Afternoon Show following the publication of a joint report which has revealed declines in smoking rates among both children and pregnant women over the past decade, North and South of the border. The report was published by the Institute of Public Health in Ireland (IPH) and the Tobacco Free Research Institute Ireland (TFRI). It shows that while tobacco control measures are being successful, disadvantaged children are at particular risk of tobacco-related harms.
Ennis native Tony Corrigan is the founder of TenderScout. TenderScout is a technology company that helps Small and Medium Enterprises win public sector contracts worth about €12 billion. Corrigan, who has some 20 years’ experience in the Information Technology sector, said he launched TenderScout after research revealed that only ten per cent of Irish SMEs were winning Irish government public tenders. Bernard Purcell, Editor of The Irish World Newspaper in London joined Máire to look at the main news stories affecting the Irish community in the UK including the horrific case of slavery in Lambeth – where 3 women, including an Irish woman, were held captive for over 30 years and also the announcement of the first official state visit of an Irish President to Britain.
Ann Norton from The Clare Crusaders and Clare Conquest Contender Andrea O’Loughlin were also guests of the show. The annual fundraiser – the Clare Conquest takes place in the Queens Nightclub this Friday November 29th where 34 amateur boxers will fight it out to be crowned champion. They have undergone a gruelling 10 weeks of training ahead of the event, which promises to be great night of entertainment for a worthy cause. The Clare Crusaders Children’s Clinic provides free therapy and specialist treatment to over 240 children with special needs in County Clare. They are a self financing service located in Barefield, Ennis. The Clinic receives no state funding and must raise over €250,000 per annum to provide the current level of therapy for children. To date we have raised over €1.6 million to deliver over 10,000 hours annually of therapy for children. Tickets for the event are selling fast – they’re available from the Clinic in Barefield or at the Queens.
