On today’s show Maire spoke to Andrew Jackson from the ISPCC – Irish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children. The ISPCC’s Shield campaign has been launched for the month of March and is focused on supporting schools, parents, teachers and students in standing up against bullying, developing positive responses and not accepting negative behaviours as normal or tolerable. As a part of the campaign and to raise much-needed funds to continue to work on the issue of bullying, the ISPCC will hold its “National Day of Action” on Friday 7th March. On the day volunteers will be out selling the ISPCC “Shield pins” in shopping centres and on streets all over the country urging the public to buy a pin and stand up against bullying. Paul “Calso” Callaghan, our resident Chef, Food Blogger & Author gave us all we needed to know for Pancake Tuesday. Check out his blog – thesustainablelarder.blogspot.com for great tips and recipes. Today he gave us the recipe for traditional crepes (8oz flour, 2 medium eggs, a pinch of salt and enough milk to bring batter to the consistency of double cream) and also for American style pancakes (350ml buttermilk, 2 eggs, 2 tbps melted butter, 250g flour, 2 tbsps baking powder, 4 tbsps caster sugar and 1 tsp of salt)
Brian McManus is a Project Co-ordinator with Clare Youth Service, he and Stephen O’Dea from Newmarket on Fergus and Dale Haughton Prendeville from Shannon were in studio to talk about how Clare Youth Service have organized a number of events this week that young people locally are taking part in – such as Masterchef, for young people around the county – it’s on in Flannan’s on Saturday March 8th and also tomorrow they’re focusing on developmental group work that teens have been participating in for the last few months. The aim is to help them express themselves and communicate better with adults.
We also met the Clare Youth Service Ukelele Orchestra on the show this afternoon. Robert McDonnell, Fina Wurm, Caoimhe Horner, Kathy Blake, Laoise Walsh and Conor Abraham performed Ingrid Michaelson’s “You & I” and “Teenage Kicks” from The Undertones.
