Mary McMahon from Clare Health Promotion in Ennis also joined the show to highlight how you can get help if you want to give up smoking. A Quit Tobacco Group has been set up in the Ennis area in a bid to provide support to those hoping to kick the habit. The first meeting will take place next Wednesday January 15th – people can register for the 6 week course by calling 065 6865841 / 065 6865839 or email [email protected]

Dr. Catherine Logan is a Nutritionist at the National Dairy Council and joined Máire to talk about how at this time of year, ‘fad’ diets, which promise quick-fixes for weight loss should be avoided.  Fad diets, especially those that encourage the elimination of entire food groups, are not recommended by nutritionists. While a certain reduction in calorie intake is advised for weight loss, it is essential that the diet remains balanced and that nutrient requirements are still met. Catherine also spoke about exercise and alternative ways of getting it – such as dance classes, or just using more exertion when cleaning the house!  For more details on proper diet you can view www.ndc.ie for advice.

John Sims, Science Teacher at Mary Immaculate Secondary in Lisdoonvarna and students Stephen O’Connell, Keelan McMahon and Tess Cassin Sheridan also spoke to the show ahead of their trip to the RDS tomorrow. The students are competing in the 50th BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition 2014, which takes place in Dublin this week.  The school has participated in the competition for 26 years now and have had much success.  Among the projects from the North Clare students is “Grading Crab Meat – An Easier Way?”, “The Changing Geography of the Young Scientist” and “Why are the Beaches of Clare Different Colours?”

Patrick Ryan is a Fine Art Photographer and pilot based in Inagh. He told The Afternoon Show about his current joint exhibition “Heaven and Earth – Visions of Co. Clare”. The show features the work of two fine art photographers – Patrick and John Mangan who bring two distinct styles together to showcase the beauty of Clare.  It’s open at the Cliffs of Moher Visitor Centre everyday from 9 to 5pm until April 11th.
