Joining Máire on todays Afternoon show was Conor Cullen of Alcohol Aware Ireland. There are calls for legislation to regulate drinks promotions and advertising which encourage harmful binge drinking among young people. Alcohol Action Ireland, the national charity for alcohol related issues, has criticised the type of drinks promotion that led to a huge crowd of young people gathering outside a Dublin NightClub on Monday. "Promotions like this are aimed squarely at young people and encourage the type of harmful binge drinking that is such a threat to health and wellbeing.
Also joining Máire on the show was Harry Hughes of Scoil Samhraidh Willie Clancy as the good news comes that the festival has been shortlisted for an IMRO (Irish Music Rights Organistaion) award. The globally known festival, held in Miltown Malbay each July has been shortlisted for Music Festival of the Year 2013 award. It is in a strong category that includes Electric Picnic, Other Voices, Body and Soul, Galway Arts Festival and Temple Bar TradFest. More than 8,500 members of IMRO nominated their favourite venues and festivals for the awards. The awards will take place on Tuesday 4th February at 6.30pm at the IMRO HQ in Dublin.
Also joining Máire on todays show was Mike Cassidy one of the organisers for the Patricia Corbett Memorial Walk. The Patricia Corbett Memorial 10km Walk/Run takes place on Sunday 9th February in Labasheeda at 12.30pm. Registration takes place at St. Kieran’s Community Centre from 12 noon. Entry fee is €10 with proceeds going to the Breast Unit at the Regional Hospital and a donation to a local charity.
