Joining Clare FM’s Gavin Grace on today’s Afternoon Show was Tom King. Tom is a Board Member of the Disabled People of Clare group and Vice Chairman of the Centre of Independent Living.  He spoke to Gavin about how the Ombudsman’s hit out at the Department of Health over the operation of a payment for disabled people. Emily O’Reilly says the upper age limit that’s imposed on the mobility allowance is illegal. It doesn’t allow people aged 66 or over to apply for the benefit, which is worth up to €208.50 per month. Manuel di Lucia from Kilkee also spoke to The Afternoon Show to mark today – the 10 year anniversary of the late Richard Harris. The world renowned actor was best known for his portrayal of The Bull McCabe in John B. Keane’s The Field among other high profile films and stage plays.  His links with Kilkee were commemorated with a statue in his honour in 2006. It was unveiled by actor Russell Crowe, with whom he starred in Gladiator. Manuel spoke about his links to Kilkee and Limerick, the times he spent in the West Clare town and how he’s remembered there.

George Kennedy is the CEO of Spina Bifida Hydrocephalus Ireland and joined Gavin to mark the very first World Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus day.  Today SBHI is taking an opportunity to raise awareness and understanding about Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus, and hopes to advocate and promote the rights of persons with these conditions. Also on today’s programme Re O Laighleis, a Short Story Writer and Michael McInerney, a student at Ennistymon CBS discussed a new book – “Flying the Banner, which features short stories from Clare’s teenage writers. It was launched in De Valera Library, Ennis, on 26th October. 33 teenage writers, ranging in age from 12 to 17 and coming from seven different schools across the Banner County, saw their professionally edited stories published by one of the country’s leading publishers of young people’s material – Ballyvaughan-based publisher, MÓINÍN (with Clare County Library and Clare Arts Office have joined in a three-year collaborative effort which sees its culmination in this publication.)The bbok will be available locally at libraries, bookshops and from the publisher – www.moinin.ie

Brian Moore of Peak Potential was in studio to tell us about how a special motivational seminar will introduce local people to the secrets of mental toughness and resilience culminating in the ultimate challenge of walking barefoot safely over 20 feet of burning hot coals. The Halloween-themed event takes place on Saturday, 27th October, at the Newmarket-on-Fergus Soccer Club facility on the Ennis Road and is aimed at raising much-needed funds for the O’Regan Park development. Registration starts at 6pm and the actual Firewalk from 8pm.
