On The Afternoon Show today Gavin Grace spoke with Journalist Paul Rowland of the Western Mail newspaper in Wales.  Paul updated listeners on the April Jones investigation. A man’s appeared before a court in Wales, accused of the abduction and murder of five-year-old April Jones. Mark Bridger, who’s 46, was remanded in custody after a brief hearing at Aberystwyth Magistrates’ Court. More than 100 officers are continuing to search for the schoolgirl, who disappeared in Machynlleth a week ago. A special service was held for April yesterday.

John Heffernan is a Power Trader with Bord Gáis, he joined Gavin to discuss how the cost of oil fell last month, but the trend over the last 12 months has seen an increase in prices. Those findings are contained in the Bord Gáis Energy Index for September, out today. John discussed how oil prices have been pushed up by the geo-political situation in oil-producing countries, in turn it’s bad news for consumers.

Sarah Keogh, a Dietician with INDI – the Irish Nutrition & Dietetic Institute spoke to Gavin about the issue of obesity. A recent ‘Growing Up in Ireland’ study showed obesity among Irish children is higher than in any other northern European country. Sarah explained health factors, diet and societies views on people who may be over weight or obese. The Irish Nutrition & Dietetic Institute (INDI) is the professional organisation for clinical nutritionists and dietitians in Ireland. Dietitians apply knowledge of food, nutrition and other related disciplines to promote health, prevent disease and aid in the management of illness. For more details see www.indi.ie

Michelle Kerrigan is the CEO of GROW who today have undertaken a new awareness campaign to mark World Mental Health Week. Grow is asking – Just How Many of your Facebook Friends are Suffering from Depression Right Now? The provocative question will be answered individually for each of Ireland’s 2.2million Facebook users by the mental health recovery organisation. Meanwhile two all time Munster rugby greats will team up in Limerick tonight (Monday 8th Oct at 6pm) to celebrate a major victory for the region in mental healthcare and suicide prevention. Munster rugby stars Alan Quinlan and Gerry McLoughlin, will be turning out to open a new €300,000 facility for GROW, the mental health care recovery organisation, at 33 Henry Street, Limerick.

Jean Maguire is the Organiser of Surf n’ Turf at the Castle – a special fundraiser for Scoil na Maighdaine Mhuire in Newmarket on Fergus.  She was joined by School Principal Ann McMahon. Scoil na Maighdhaine Mhuire in Newmarket on Fergus has a high proportion of students with special needs – and the event to raise much needed funding will take place at Dromoland Castle on Thursday 11th. The night will feature a host of celebrity chefs, cooking demonstrations and the event is hosted by Nick Munier of Masterchef fame. Part of the funds raised will also go to Clare Crusaders.
