The Afternoon Show – Monday October 1st 2012

Today on The Afternoon Show Gavin Grace was joined by Cormac O’Sullivan of DNG O’Sullivan Hurley in Ennis to discuss the current trend in house prices.House prices around the country are continuing to fall. Daft.ie has released figures, which show that asking prices dropped by over 3 per cent between July and September – down 14 per cent from the same period last year. Also up for discussion was the launch of a new property price register. It’s hoped the new register will help restore stability and confidence in the Irish market. Ireland’s first register of its kind went live at the weekend, and allows users to see the sale price of every property that changed hands since January of 2010.

Also making headlines today was the speculation surrounding possible cuts to child benefit payments. Pakie Kelly, Spokesman for the National Forum of Family Resource Centres spoke to Gavin about the impact this could have on families. Proposals to cut Child Benefit payments were made by an advisory group set up by Minister for Social Protection Joan Burton. It said that child benefit payments could be cut to around €100 per child each month. The report says this proposal could save up to €200m a year. Currently, child benefit is paid at €140 per child for the first two children; the third child receives €148, while €160 is paid for the fourth and subsequent children.

Dr. Marian Faughnan, a Nutritionist with Safe Food Ireland joined the show to talk about how your typical Chinese takeaway of starter and main course served with fried rice can contain more than your entire day’s calorie intake. Research released shows the average portion of Prawn Crackers they tested contained over 600 calories, while some starter dishes provided a third of a person’s daily calorie count. Safefood says the problem is that Chinese food is traditionally healthy, but dishes here have been adapted to suit western tastes with high fat, salt and sugar content, and overall bigger portions.
