The Afternoon Show – Monday November 26th 2012

On The Afternoon Show today Gavin Grace was joined by Mary Considine, Director of Shannon Airport and Lissycasey native, to discuss events at the Mid West Airport. The festive season will get a rousing lift-off in the Mid-West as Shannon Airport hosts a Music Celebration on Friday, 7th December in the airport’s Departures Terminal.  The internationally acclaimed Kilfenora Céilí Band from North Clare will headline the free event, which will feature the best of music and comedy talent from across the region. 

Aoife Murphy of the National Consumer Agency also joined the show to discuss how it’s estimated nearly €260 million will be spent online by Irish people in the run up to Christmas. Today is traditionally the busiest Monday before the festive period for online retailers. The National Consumer Agency is advising people of their rights, if they choose to do their Christmas shopping online.

Una Dillon, Head of Card Services with the Irish payment Services Organisation also informed our listeners of a new scam. A warning has been issued after a number of incidents of "skimming" at train ticket vending machines. Thieves are using new equipment to record card details and PINs, with at least three incidents being reported last week. Gardaí are investigating, and believe that a single gang is operating the scam. The Irish Payment Services Organisation is advising cardholders to always hide their PIN.

Gavin also checked in with Flan Garvey from the Clare Tourist Council and Carole Barlum from Milwaukee. A group of tourists from Milwaukee are currently touring the county as a result of meeting Flan, and others from Clare, at the Milwaukee Irish Festival. 

Derek McMahon is a member of the Cecilian Musical Society and plays Bernardo in this year’s production of West Side Story. With a magnificent cast in place, Nigel Dugdale and Jean Wallace playing the lead roles of Tony and Maria. Des Henn will return as Producer, Barbara Meany as Choreographer and Noel Lennon will once again take up the baton as Musical Director. The show takes to the stage at the Lime Tree Theatre, Limerick this Wednesday 28th November until 1st December.
