On Monday’s show Máire Moynahan was joined by Denise Dunne from Clare Haven Services and Elaine Dalton from Clare Women’s Network to mark day 1 of the annual 16 Days of Action Opposing Violence against Women campaign. Domestic abuse and sexual violence is an alarming problem in our country. Services are there to help but are they good enough? The SPEAK UP CAFÉ initiative is being organised to involve individuals who have been affected by domestic abuse and/or sexual violence to come and tell organisations as to how services can be improved. It is open to adults who have experienced domestic abuse and/or sexual violence either currently or in the past. It is also open to family members and close friends who may be living with or supporting survivors. The events are hosted by the Mid West Regional Advisory Committee on Violence Against Women and will take place tomorrow 26 November, 11am – 2pm, at the Greenhills Hotel, Limerick; Thursday 28 November from 11am – 2pm at Temple Gate Hotel, Ennis. Philip Moreau, our resident gardening expert and horticulturist from Glenbrook Nurseries in Tuamgraney, was in studio to answer all your gardening queries. He spoke about tree planting season, which we’re currently in. he also talked about whitethorn hedging, spindle trees, elderflowers and elderberries and using them for preserves and wine! Rita McCarthy from the Scattery Island Heritage and Tourism Group also joined the show as their gathering event ‘Celebrate Scattery Island’ has been recognised as the Community Gathering of the Year at the 10th Annual Excellence in Local Government Awards held by Chambers Ireland in association with the Department of Environment, Community and Local Government. At the awards ceremony, Clare County Council was praised for its work on ‘Celebrate Scattery Island,’ which took place from the 5th to the 7th of July. The group are now planning to host the event again next year.
Veerle Claeys also spoke to Máire about how to make felt slippers for Christmas! Each Thursday running up to Christmas, at 8pm in the X-PO community hub in Kilnaboy, people are getting together to learn how to use sheep’s wool to make an array of items such as slippers, tea cosies, oven mitts and more.
